Why do gutters clog in Soulsbyville?
Because two kinds of trees fill them. The county's 2024 wildfire plan maps oak savanna below Soulsbyville, with blue and live oaks and gray pine, and mixed conifer above it, with ponderosa and sugar pine, incense cedar and black oak. Here the two meet. Pine needles come down from late September into January, the deciduous oaks drop their leaves in November and December, and the live oaks shed old leaves a few at a time all year. Wet leaves lie flat over the needles and wash down to the outlet, and that is where a downspout plugs. Our page on why gutters overflow in the rain shows how to tell a full gutter from a plugged downspout.
Cold nights are the other reason to clean before winter. Down in Sonora, the average low in December and January is about 32 degrees, right at freezing (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals), and Soulsbyville is higher up the hill. Water held behind a plugged downspout has nights cold enough to freeze in it, so get the fall cleaning done by late November or early December. Our page on when to clean gutters lays out the whole year.
Soulsbyville is unincorporated and sits in county Supervisor District 2 with Willow Springs, Crystal Falls and Phoenix Lake Country Club Estates, and we clean gutters across that area. The town center is mapped High fire hazard in the State Responsibility Area, so California's PRC 4291 and county Chapter 8.14 both apply: CAL FIRE's Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit inspects for the state rule, and the county's Fire Prevention Division enforces its own.
