What does gutter cleaning include?
A full gutter cleaning empties every gutter on the house, gets every downspout draining again and clears the roof of the needles and leaves that would fill them right back up. Then the debris leaves with us. Here is what we do on every visit.
- Every run of gutter scooped out by hand and bagged
- Downspouts flushed with a hose until water runs out the bottom
- Needles, leaves and twigs cleared off the roof and out of the valleys
- Around skylights, solar panels and the chimney
- Every bag hauled away, nothing left in your yard
- We tell you what we saw up there: leaks, sagging runs, loose hangers or soft boards
Foothill gutters fill faster than most. Oaks drop their leaves all at once in late fall, and pines drop needles all year.
When should you clean your gutters in Sonora?
Twice a year for most homes: late November, once the oaks have dropped their leaves, and late April through May, before fire season. Rarely more: how often depends on the trees over your roof and how hard the storms hit, and we tell you on the free estimate.

Average rain in Sonora, inches
January
Sonora's wettest month, with about 6.3 inches of rain on average. A gutter that was not cleaned in fall is spilling over its front edge by now, and up the hill, snow sits on top of whatever is still in it.
February
Still wet, about 5.5 inches. Storms knock twigs and needles into gutters between cleanings. If you see water pouring over the edge during a storm, call us to clear it between storms.
March
About 5.4 inches of rain, and the last of the big storms. Snow is still possible in Twain Harte and Mi-Wuk Village. Note any spots that overflowed this winter for the spring cleaning.
April
Rain tapers to about 3 inches. Winter has left needles, twigs and grit in the gutters. Late April through May is the window for the spring cleaning.
May
Clean before fire season. May gets only about 1.5 inches of rain, the hills dry out, and whatever winter left in your gutters dries into fuel that a blowing ember can light.
June
The dry months start: from June through September, Sonora averages less than half an inch of rain a month. Gutters full of dry needles are the risk now, not water.
July
The driest month of the year, about 0.03 inches of rain. If your house sits under heavy pines and the gutters were not cleaned in spring, now is the time.
August
Still bone dry. A look along the roofline from the ground tells you a lot: needles hanging over the gutter edge mean it is full.
September
Ponderosa pines start shedding their older needles, and they keep at it into October. Gutters under pines fill fast this time of year.
October
The first real rain, about 1.6 inches, and the heavy needle drop. Hold off on the fall cleaning until the oaks let go of their leaves, but get on the schedule now.
November
The best time for the fall cleaning: late in the month, once most oak leaves are down. If your oaks hold on, early December still beats the big storms of December and January.
December
About 5.5 inches of rain, and snow up the hill. Gutters should be clear before now. Up the hill, the fall cleaning needs to be done before the first snow.

What clogged gutters do to a foothill home
A gutter's job is to carry rain away from the house. When it clogs, the water spills over the front edge instead, right beside your walls. The damage builds quietly over a few winters, then shows up all at once.
Water at the foundation
Overflow lands next to the house and soaks the ground along the foundation. Over a few winters, that is how crawl spaces flood.
Rotten fascia boards
Water held in a full gutter soaks the board it hangs from. The board softens, and the gutter starts to pull away from the roof.
Ice dams up the hill
In Twain Harte and Mi-Wuk Village, water trapped in a full gutter freezes and can push melting snow back up under the shingles.
Fuel for embers
CAL FIRE tells homeowners to keep gutters free of plant debris, because wind-blown embers that land in dry needles and leaves can light them right at the edge of the roof.

How much does gutter cleaning cost in Sonora?
It depends on the house, so we look first and give you one price for the whole job, free. A single-story house with loose leaves is at the low end. A two-story house under pines, with downspouts that have not drained in a year, costs more.
Need the leaves raked or the brush cleared while we are there? Ask, and we can price it into the same visit.

What customers say about our crew
We asked for a quote for roof and gutter cleaning. Levi came out the next day, provided a reasonable quote, and did the job immediately. We liked the can-do attitude and pleasant, open demeanor. Would be happy to deal with Levi again.
…Vazul and his crew are great! They went above and beyond to make sure we were completely satisfied. Communication was great, they showed up when they said they would, worked hard and are very fairly priced. We will definitely use them again.
…Levi is reliable & his work is outstanding! I called him for an estimate, he came the next day & two days later the job was completed! Will definitely be using him again!
Levi and his crew did a great job. Everyone was prompt, professional, and courteous. They did a good job cleaning up.
Should you clean your own gutters?
On a single-story house, with a sturdy ladder on firm ground and someone holding it, you can. On anything taller, steep or metal, we would leave it to a crew.
A national study of emergency room records counted about 136,000 ladder injuries a year in the US, and 97 percent of them happened at home or on a farm, not on a job site (American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 2007).
The older you are, the more a fall costs you. Last year we took a lot of calls from homeowners in a leg cast after coming off a ladder, with the gutters still half done. If you are over 60, we would rather you did not climb at all.
If you do it yourself
- Work from the ladder, not the roof, and move the ladder often instead of leaning out
- Scoop into a bucket hung on the ladder, then bag it
- Run a hose down each downspout to check it drains
- Stay off wet or metal roofs entirely

Gutter cleaning across Tuolumne County
Based in Sonora, serving the towns around it. What lands in your gutters changes as you head up the hill: more oak leaves down low, more pine needles and snow in the high country.
-
Jamestown
The lowest and most oak-heavy town we serve. Oak leaves come down all at once in November and December, right before the wettest months.
-
Sonora
Oaks and pines grow over the same roofs, so gutters get leaves in late fall and needles all year. Most homes here need the fall and spring cleanings.
-
Columbia
Heavy oak leaf drop that overflows gutters in the first big storm if they were cleaned too early in fall.
-
Tuolumne
The old lumber town, where the oaks grow with gray pine and the ponderosa forest starts just up the hill. Needles slide off the roof into the gutters with each rain, so we clear the roof first.
-
Soulsbyville
Where the foothill oaks meet the pines, so leaves and needles fill the same gutter and pack the downspouts, and a full gutter can freeze on a cold winter night.
-
Twain Harte
Where the foothill oaks give way to pine and fir. Needles pile up on roofs and in gutters year round, and snow follows them, so the fall cleaning has to be done before the first snow.
-
Mi-Wuk Village
Deep in the pines, with winter snow. Gutters full of needles freeze and back water up under the shingles, so clean before the first snow.

Gutter cleaning questions we hear most
How much does gutter cleaning cost in Sonora?
It depends on the house, so we give you one price for the whole job after a free look. A single-story house with loose leaves costs the least. Two stories, a steep or metal roof, packed needles and clogged downspouts cost more.
How often should gutters be cleaned in the foothills?
Twice a year for most Sonora homes: late November, after the oaks drop their leaves, and late April or May, before fire season. Rarely more. How often depends on the trees over your roof and how severe the storms are, and we tell you on the free estimate.
Should I clean my gutters before or after the leaves fall?
After. Oaks around Sonora usually let go of their leaves in November and December, so a cleaning in early October gets refilled within weeks. Wait until most leaves are down, then clean before the big storms of December and January.
Do you clean the roof too?
Yes. We clear pine needles, leaves and twigs off the roof and out of the valleys, and around skylights, solar panels and the chimney. Needles left on the roof wash into clean gutters with the next rain, so we do both on one visit.
Do you haul away what comes out of the gutters?
Yes. Everything we take out of the gutters and off the roof is bagged and leaves with us. You do not need room in your green waste bin or a trip to the transfer station.
Do clogged gutters matter in fire season?
Yes. CAL FIRE's home hardening guide says to keep gutters free of plant debris, because embers blown ahead of a wildfire can land in dry needles and leaves and light them at the roof edge. Clean them in late spring, before the hills dry out, and again after the fall leaf drop.
Are you insured?
Yes. We are fully insured, and we show proof on request. Ask for it when we come out for the free estimate, before anyone sets up a ladder at your house.
