Gutters before the snow in Mi-Wuk Village
Mi-Wuk Village is deep in the forest that the county's 2024 wildfire plan puts above the foothill oaks: ponderosa and sugar pine, Douglas-fir, white fir, incense cedar and black oak. A ponderosa drops a quarter to a third of its needles every year, starting in late September and still coming down in January, according to UC Agriculture and Natural Resources. That is why we clean here late in fall, as close to the first snow as the weather allows, with the second cleaning in spring. Two a year is enough for most homes, even up here; it is rarely more, and only when a hard storm season fills the gutters again. Our page on when to clean gutters has the whole year.
There is no NOAA weather station in Mi-Wuk Village, but two in the high country bracket its height: Hetch Hetchy, a little lower, averages about 51 inches of snow a year, and Cherry Valley Dam, a little higher, about 108 inches (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals). Ice dams are a separate problem. University of Minnesota Extension says they come mainly from heat flowing out of the house through the roof, not from the gutters. We do not remove snow, steam ice dams or do roofing, and we tell you who can.
The town center is mapped Very High fire hazard in the State Responsibility Area. California's PRC 4291 asks you to keep the roof free of leaves and needles, CAL FIRE's Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit inspects for it, and county Chapter 8.14 applies too. The county's 2024 wildfire plan says the Mi-Wuk Sugar Pine Protection District does volunteer home inspections, a second look before CAL FIRE comes. Needles on the roof are part of that, which is why roof needle and debris removal goes on the same visit.
A Mi-Wuk Village gutter year
| When | What happens | What we do |
| Late September to January | Ponderosa needles fall, a quarter to a third of each tree's needles a year | Let the heaviest drop come down first |
| Late fall, before the first snow | Needles have piled up since September | Scoop every gutter, flush every downspout, clear the roof |
| December to March | Snow up the hill | No snow or ice removal; we tell you who to call |
| Late April and May | After the snow, before fire season | The spring cleaning, before the hills dry out |
