What fills gutters in Jamestown?
Mostly oak leaves. Jamestown sits in the low foothills, which the county's 2024 wildfire plan describes as oak savanna: blue, valley and live oaks with gray pine over grass. The deciduous oaks start dropping their leaves in November and keep going through December, while the interior live oaks keep theirs about two years and shed the old ones a little at a time.
The trouble is the timing. In Sonora, three miles north, rain doubles from October to November and peaks from December to February, with January the wettest month at about 6.3 inches. A gutter cleaned in October fills with leaves again before the big storms, so in oak country we wait until most leaves are down. Our page on when to clean gutters in Sonora lays out the whole year, and why gutters overflow in the rain covers what a spilling gutter is telling you.
Jamestown's town center is mapped Moderate fire hazard on the state's map, the lowest of its three ratings. The roof rule in state law, PRC 4291, still covers every home in the State Responsibility Area: keep the roof "free of leaves, needles, or other vegetative materials." CAL FIRE's Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit inspects, and county Chapter 8.14 adds clearance along driveways and roads. Zones change parcel by parcel, so check your own address.
